ROGER EBERT:
THERE'S A CHARMING LITTLE DOCUMENTARY OPENING AROUND THE COUNTRY NAMED "MAKE BELIEVE." I'M BILL KURTIS SPEAKING FOR ROGER EBERT.

IT FOLLOWS THE YOUNG FINALISTS IN THE WORLD MAGICIAN CONTEST HELD EVERY YEAR IN LAS VEGAS. THESE KIDS DREAM OF THE CHANCE FOR PROFESSIONAL CAREERS. TWO OF THE POPULAR CONTESTANTS ARE FROM SOUTH AFRICA. THE FILM WATCHES THEM PRACTICE, OVER AND OVER AND OVER. HIROKI HARA, WHO LIVES IN KITAYAMA, JAPAN, USES THE VILLAGE HALL AND REHEARSES RELENTLESSLY ALL DAY, EVERY DAY, MENTIONING THAT HE GROWS LONELY THERE ALL BY HIMSELF, BUT HIS GOAL MAKES IT WORTH WHILE.

ANOTHER SHEDS A FEW TEARS WHEN TWO COACHES TELL HIM HE'S NOT READY. ON THE BIG DAY, HE IS READY AND THEN SOME. THUMBS UP.

CHRISTY LEMIRE:
Ok, thank you so much for that, Roger.
